Eindhoven the very designiest

Eindhoven isn’t exactly ranked being the ‘designiest’ city in the world or anything. I don’t really care because I recently found out that the New York Times wrote about the lovely city (Or large village) we are situated in.

31NEXT2_SPAN-articleLargeThe article refers to passed times when most of the Philips company left Eindhoven and how the city is now using its history of Philips factories. Other ‘designy’ things are mentioned like the prestigious ‘Design Academy’ and the ‘Dutch Design Week’ (Also coming up, keep following our blog to read more on this in the near future). It’s good to see outsiders are also discovering Eindhoven as a city that houses creativity and design and has already done so for a long time. We haven’t chosen Eindhoven as our headquarters just for fun :-)

For any of you workers, citizens of Eindhoven or good old Eindhovenpatriotists out there,  hit the link below and read all that the New york Times travel pages have to write about our city.

Cup Cakes for Computers

Cupcakes

Recently we donated one of our old systems to Karin, and in return she made us these fabulous Pac-Man cup cakes. This old school reference to the 8-bit games of yesteryear surely does appeal to our geek-spot (insert tear of joy here). On behalf of the 3Dimerce team: Thank you, Karin!

StarkHUD 2020

starkhud_3dimerce
Are we all going to wear such -ridiculously looking, but cool- virtual reality glasses in 2020?
Pretty convenient when walking through a city and constantly being assisted by location based augmented reality information.
A bit like Layar in VR eyewear. I think the matchmatching option will not come through any privacy laws though.

The video below was a viral for the 2010 Iron Man 2 movie, so it’s already a bit outdated. Still very funny and cool.
I think we’re very close to an actual “StarkHUD 2020″ in near future.

What do you think, do we need to wait another nine years for this to be reality or will we wear such glasses (or equivalent) before 2020?
Or maybe not at all?

Glasses-free 3D!

These days most of the affordable consumer 3DTV’s are equipped with so-called active shutter glasses which rapidly blocks alternate eyes. In contrast to the next-gen passive solution, these glasses are a little heavy and can cause discomfort. Autostereoscopic displays are on the way but in the meantime there is a pretty solution to watch stereoscopic content without the need for special glasses. All you need is a high-refresh-rate monitor and a pair of these cool looking gum-things with fancy LED’s.

You think it sounds too good to be true? Well, it actually is… It’s obviously impossible. Imagine your eyes blinking 60 times a second and watching a two-hour 3D movie like that! Discomfort anyone? :)

Nevertheless, it’s still fun to watch this guy’s fake demo:

Authenticity

Koons-knows-authenticityLike everything else we are also continually improving and reflecting on our core values, one of them being authenticity. We value authenticity very much and strife to be as authentic as we can be.  In a recent frenzy of  authenticity (I bet you’re wondering what that looks like) someone asked whether it is possible to be too authentic.

Well, being ’authentic’ is a sort of balancing act, a ball on the top of a hill. When you push it too much, you’ll roll down the wrong slope and find yourself authentic beyond acceptance.

Check the do and don’t section at Vice. I can spent hours looking at the pictures of people pushing the boundaries of authenticity. And I love the fact they have a weak spot for geeks and losers at Vice.

Proud of Proun

STRP Festival is one of the largest art and technology festivals in Europe. It’s held in Eindhoven, the city of Philips where 3Dimerce is based as well. Accompanied by my college Matijs, I paid a visit to the STRP exposition this year to experience a stereoscopic game made by Joost van Dongen. He’s a friend of mine whom I worked with in the team that created the Blob during our Art and Technology study. Joost, who is now lead programmer at Ronimo Games created the game called Proun based on a basic game play concept I had a long time ago. In a nutshell, the idea is to avoid obstacles while racing with a ball bound to a cable in an arty looking environment inspired by artifacts of famous painters.

The future of shopping for cloths?

The end of every men’s nightmare…
Faster shopping without too much hastle ;-)
A bit too unrealistic in terms of experience, but with current augmented reality technology you can match this pretty close (just like the Ray Ban sunglass fitting room).
