3Dimerce glows in the dark

GLOW 2011

Yesterday after work, a number of 3Dimerce employees visited this year’s GLOW forum for light and architecture in Eindhoven.
Artists and designers from the Netherlands and abroad exhibit light art and design applications that have been created using new media technology and more traditional projection techniques.

Objects and installations are present throughout the city, along a route that can be traveled on foot once darkness sets in.
This year’s GLOW route literally bridges the worlds of art and technology, connecting the Van Abben Museum of modern art and the Technical University of Eindhoven. The first is celebrating it’s 75th anniversary, the second it’s 55th.

We all agreed that top honors this year go to the “Afterlight” graffiti, that is brought into virtual 3D by computer generated lighting effects. Please click the link for a bit of home video of Afterlight in action.
An honorable mention goes to the high voltage generator that plays music with lightning. Yes actual lightning! Nothing beats the Star Wars imperial march played with lightning.

As every year, it is amazing to see how light can bring an inanimate object to life. Not unlike we try to accomplish in our own daily practice, when we bring our customer’s products to life under the virtual lights in our computers…

Swatch-pensive!

swatchpensive

Some call it plastic, some call it synthetic material, but whatever you’re call it, in some forms it can be Valuable! This must be what the late Mr. Peter Blum and his wife Linda though in 1983, when the rise of the Swatch brand started.

The Blum collection is, with over 4.350 items, one of the most complete collections of its kind, this fascinating assembly contains notable examples of the celebrated relationship between SWATCH and art, including Mimmo Paladino’s famous Oigol Oro; a set comprising Alfred Hofkunst’s Verduhra, Guhrke and Bonjuhr, each watch signed by the artist; and ten unique Swatch watches, including six prototypes, created by Kiki Picasso. American painter Keith Haring’s collaboration with Swatch is represented in the collection by a set of the four production models released in the United States — Modele avec Personnage, Milles Pattes, Serpent and Blanc sur Noir — along with a number of prototypes and variants. Additional highlights include Swatch Puff, the first (of only 120 pieces produced), Rudolph Moshammer’s Feathers, and a special Jelly Fish designed and signed by Andrew Logan.

The sale of the collection is estimated to realise between 3.5 and 6.3 million Dollars. Yes, million! Take a look at the PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY Website, to read a bit more!

An average of $1.000 per watch is certainly pretty steep for a plastic watch... Shows you what the added value ...

“The Fanwagen”: ultimate social machine

What a good social marketing campaign this is! An attempt from Volkwagen to attract more fans on it’s Facebook page, and we think it’ll work!

the fanwagen by VolkwagenThe idea is simple: add a huge amount of ‘what’s in it for me’ for the Facebook user to Like Volkswagen. In return one of the fans can win a custom build Volkwagen Classic car that’s converted to an honest to god social media machine. Fans have choice of two VW Evergreens of the past: the T1 Van & the Beetle. The model that’s been liked the most at the end of this marketing campaign, will be built: so effectively the car is ‘built on Likes’. At this moment the T1 Van is the most favourable with almost 80% of the votes. Not quite a surprise within a concept that’s trying to build a social car: a T1 simply fits much more friends than a Beetle!

What’s very interesting for us about this campaign, is that the majority of the execution was created with 3D. So all the imagery of the T1 and Beetle are of course rendered, since the actual car still needs to be build in the metal. Good example of a cross media marketing campaign within a social media environment! Well done Volkswagen, well done!

Dutch Design Week Ft. 3Dimerce

The annual Dutch Design Week event took over the whole centre of Eindhoven last week. The event shows the latest trends in design from all over the world with great focus on local artists and developments.

On 4 main locations throughout the city both young talent and established designers show the latest trends and technical innovations in the design field. Lots of workshops were also held, like ‘truck cab design’ and creating your own lamp (What else did you expect in Eindhoven…? :-) )

The regional design-university SintLucas invited 3Dimerce to join their exposition as the leading company in interactive design. SintLucas’ stand showed students being inspired by a mix of companies, one of which was 3Dimerce. Thousands of visitors have seen 3Dimerce’s excellent creativity and explored the link between our company and the creative education in the region.

This year’s edition more than ever featured new techniques such as 3D printing. The technique has become available for individual designers as well. We saw quite a lot of 3D printers, printed designs and prototypes.

See you next year at the Dutch Design Week!

Autumn inspiration

AutumnalEindhoven_small

On my bicycle trip to the office, autumn treats me to a sensational palette of beautiful colors. Top of the bill is this row of trees that every year turn the most sensational bright red color.

For a few weeks a year, this sight brings a smile to my face every morning. It also adds danger to my trip because I spend hundreds of metres only looking up, and not where I’m going. So far, I haven’t crashed into anyone. Let’s hope it stays a pleasure :)

Eindhoven best inner city 2011

Eindhoven_city

This month, Eindhoven was voted Best town center of The Netherlands for 2011-2013.

Awarded by the retail industry, the award is given every three years to the city that offers the most attractive town centre.

Eindhoven has won the award in the category large town centre for “the large scale development of the town centre over the past years and the unity that the town centre presents as a result of this”. “It is the opinion of the jury that due to the investments, the town centre of Eindhoven is firmly on the map, both within The Netherlands and internationally”.

DAF and us.

DAF groupies

Seriously, you must be kidding. A whole company of testosterone ridden young men out on their own in a convoy of classic cars? A recipe for disaster I tell you, an accident waiting to happen.

Yet this was exactly what 3Dimerce decided to organize for the company outing that accompanied the presentation of the new medium term strategy. Balls of steel.

optocht

In retrospect, everything turned out fine. We had a hell of a fun day. We not only raced with DAFs, but also visited an ostrich farm (I like them better on my plate), climbed an old wind mill (very impressive craftmanship), and held a BBQ to top it off (ah, the ostrich again). Best of all, no one got hurt, and almost nothing got broken. I say we should up the ante for our outings to come a little. Something on a real race track perhaps?

Kurt Vonnegut on Storytelling

Nice, short – and funny – lecture by Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughterhouse-5, Cats’s Cradle) on the structure of stories. Vonnegut visually reveals the core structure of many stories. It makes you think: “Is it really that simple?” Most often it is. Have a look at this or this.

For more on story structure, see: Freytag’s pyramid and the 8 Point story arc, which are all basically the same.

O, and the ancient artifacts he uses to scribble his graphs with are called a blackboard and a piece of chalk.
