Chuck Close So Close

ChuckClose

Sunday Januari 29th, Chuck Close will perform an artist talk to celebrate the opening of prints in Kunsthal in Rotterdam. A unique chance to meet this remarkable artist whose work might trick you into thinking it is computer generated. In fact, it is the product of a keen eye and in some way, a twisted mind.

Video:

The trailer of Chuck Cose: A Portrait in Progress. With extra bonus: Phillip Glass talking about process. This is my porn.

Scorsese on Development

(…)There’s no such thing here, like in this world where everything now is instantaneous, the development is not instantaneous.

One has to work through it.

And the only way you work through it is not for the awards, you work through it for the pleasure of the work.

Point and Line to Plane

20120102-071920.jpg

(…) A point is a small bit of colour put by the artist on the canvas. It is neither a geometric point nor a mathematical abstraction; it is extension, form and colour. This form can be a square, a triangle, a circle, a star or something more complex. The point is the most concise form but, according to its placement on the basic plane, it will take a different tonality. It can be isolated or resonate with other points or lines.

A line is the product of a force which has been applied in a given direction: the force exerted on the pencil or paintbrush by the artist. The produced linear forms may be of several types: a straight line, which results from a unique force applied in a single direction; an angular line, resulting from the alternation of two forces in different directions, or a curved (or wave-like) line, produced by the effect of two forces acting simultaneously. A plane may be obtained by condensation (from a line rotated around one of its ends) (…)

zSpace – A Virtual holographic Experience from Infinite Z

infinitivezThe marketing term “holographic” is often used for devices that in reality won’t give you the spectacular experience you where hoping for. At least the many devices I’ve tried didn’t satisfy my expectations.

During my visit to Autodesk University in Las Vegas last month, I went to the exhibition floor and was approached by a representative of Infinite Z who wanted to show me their new “holographic” device. Skeptical as I was, I put on the lightweight polarized glasses and was immediately stunned by the experience. The visually attractive 3D scene in front of my eyes looked very realistic, with a real sense of depth. The eye-tracking system made it even more immersive because I was able to move my head and view the scene from different angles. In addition to that, Infinite Z added a 3D stylus that I could use to manipulate the virtual scene. This worked so intuitive that I immediately understood how to manipulate the presented 3D objects the way I wanted.

This great experience is best understood by watching the video. Of course it’s a marketing video and it won’t look like that if you are not the user wearing the glasses, but if you do, you will experience exactly what’s visualized in the video.

Not only our 3D artists could benefit from this technology, I think this will be attractive for our clients as well. Viewing and manipulating a OneShot® SOURCE will be great with this. And for POS applications, I can imagine that it will be quite appealing to interact with a non-physical product in an intuitive way like this.

Times Square Magic

In our eagerness for new technologies and great examples of them, I stumbled upon this great augmented reality case. I found this one in a place I wasn’t expecting it; the Disney theme park enthusiasts forums (Now you know what I do in my spare time…) . Disney brought the magic to New York’s world famous Times Square. A marked spot, a huge display and all your Disney friends together form the ingredients to the huge augmented reality experience Disney delivers to tourists and Manhattan citizens.

Not specifically a ‘consumer product’ we are looking at here but it sure is nice! :-D

5 Years “Small Gift, Big Difference”!

As you probably know, 3Dimerce is partnering with a unique child daycare center in Ecuador for quite a while. Actually this year we’re working structurally together for 5 years in a project we call “Small Gift, Big Difference”. The past four years we’ve send most of our clients and relations a “Christmas gift”. However not the obligatory bottle of wine or posh card, no we’ve send a unique hand-made drawing from one of the Villa Ticca children. In return our clients give up their fysical present, which we spend as a combined donation on a specific project in Ecuador.

This year we came up with a new concept together with the ladies and children of Villa Ticca, so expect something new from us at the end of December this year!
If you want to be sure that you’re on the mailing list, send us an e-mail to info@3dimerce.com.

Our 5 year anniversary was already celebrated yesterday in Quito by all the kids. See the joy below:

3Dimerce glows in the dark

GLOW 2011

Yesterday after work, a number of 3Dimerce employees visited this year’s GLOW forum for light and architecture in Eindhoven.
Artists and designers from the Netherlands and abroad exhibit light art and design applications that have been created using new media technology and more traditional projection techniques.

Objects and installations are present throughout the city, along a route that can be traveled on foot once darkness sets in.
This year’s GLOW route literally bridges the worlds of art and technology, connecting the Van Abben Museum of modern art and the Technical University of Eindhoven. The first is celebrating it’s 75th anniversary, the second it’s 55th.

We all agreed that top honors this year go to the “Afterlight” graffiti, that is brought into virtual 3D by computer generated lighting effects. Please click the link for a bit of home video of Afterlight in action.
An honorable mention goes to the high voltage generator that plays music with lightning. Yes actual lightning! Nothing beats the Star Wars imperial march played with lightning.

As every year, it is amazing to see how light can bring an inanimate object to life. Not unlike we try to accomplish in our own daily practice, when we bring our customer’s products to life under the virtual lights in our computers…

Swatch-pensive!

swatchpensive

Some call it plastic, some call it synthetic material, but whatever you’re call it, in some forms it can be Valuable! This must be what the late Mr. Peter Blum and his wife Linda though in 1983, when the rise of the Swatch brand started.

The Blum collection is, with over 4.350 items, one of the most complete collections of its kind, this fascinating assembly contains notable examples of the celebrated relationship between SWATCH and art, including Mimmo Paladino’s famous Oigol Oro; a set comprising Alfred Hofkunst’s Verduhra, Guhrke and Bonjuhr, each watch signed by the artist; and ten unique Swatch watches, including six prototypes, created by Kiki Picasso. American painter Keith Haring’s collaboration with Swatch is represented in the collection by a set of the four production models released in the United States — Modele avec Personnage, Milles Pattes, Serpent and Blanc sur Noir — along with a number of prototypes and variants. Additional highlights include Swatch Puff, the first (of only 120 pieces produced), Rudolph Moshammer’s Feathers, and a special Jelly Fish designed and signed by Andrew Logan.

The sale of the collection is estimated to realise between 3.5 and 6.3 million Dollars. Yes, million! Take a look at the PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY Website, to read a bit more!

An average of $1.000 per watch is certainly pretty steep for a plastic watch... Shows you what the added value ...
